One week after Chick-fil-A opened on North Greenbush Road, a new Aldi store will open right behind it. On Monday morning, there were still long lines of cars waiting to get into Chick-fil-A.
The entry to the Aldi store at 500 North Greenbush Road, or Route 4, and the Chick-fil-A restaurant at 502 North Greenbush Road, at the corner of Blooming Grove Drive, are the same.
The old Aldi store at 307 Columbia Turnpike in the city of Rensselaer will be replaced by the new grocery shop. Politicians in the city are upset that the older store is about to close.
“Rensselaer needs its own grocery store, and a lot of people have said they want and support a market in the city. “We think Rensselaer, along with parts of Albany and other nearby towns, can support a market,” said Mayor Michael Stammel in a statement about the market closing.
There were still things in the Columbia Turnpike store on Monday, but several shelves were empty. There were no signs at the store on Columbia Turnpike saying when it would close, but recent news stories say it will close for good on Wednesday. The communications company for Aldi didn’t respond right away to an email sent to them.
“It will be nice to have a new store,” said Becky Dellavechia, who drives from Castleton to the Rensselaer store.
Dellavechia said that the store on Columbia Turnpike is old and needs to be replaced. However, she said that moving the store to North Greenbush, which is four and a half miles away, might be bad for people who don’t have cars.
Dellavechia said that on Monday, the staff at the Columbia Turnpike was giving out $5 coupons that could be used at the new North Greenbush shop.
On Thursday at 8:30 a.m., a ribbon will be cut to mark the opening of the North Greenbushmarket. The store’s website says that the new market is also in Rensselaer because it has the 12144 ZIP code, which includes parts of East Greenbush and North Greenbush as well as Rensselaer.
“The ceremony will happen about 30 minutes before the store opens. After the event, customers will be able to go into the store right away. “We hope to be your go-to grocery store,” says an internet post.
Aldi hadn’t responded to the questions that political leaders had asked, they said.
Rensselaer County Legislator Brian Stall, R-Rensselaer, said in a statement, “I’m very disappointed that Aldi’s management never responded to my messages and made this sudden decision to close.” “Many Rensselaer residents who walk to the store won’t be able to take a taxi or Uber to other supermarkets without spending too much on food.”
