New frozen fruit recall hits Walmart, Target and Aldi

Verify your cold storage: Walmart, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Target, and Aldi are recalling several varieties of frozen fruit due to probable Listeria contamination.

Sunrise Growers, a subsidiary of SunOpta, voluntarily recalled frozen fruit goods due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism that can cause infections in humans, according to the FDA. Pineapple sourced from a different vendor ties together fruit goods as disparate as blackberries and cherries.

Frozen fruit has been recalled three times this month already. Earlier this month, a Hepatitis A epidemic was connected to frozen strawberries sold at Walmart, Costco, and HEB that originated from Oregon’s Willamette Valley Fruit Co. Organic DayBreak Blend, marketed at Costco and produced by California’s Wawona Frozen Foods, was voluntarily recalled just days earlier owing to possible Hepatitis A contamination of Mexican-grown strawberries used in the product.

What brands of frozen fruit are being recalled?

Here is the full list of items that have been recalled.

  • Walmart: Walmart sells Great Value Mixed Fruit, Great Value Dark Sweet Cherries, and Great Value Mango Chunks in 16-ounce packs.
  • Whole Foods: Whole Foods sells 365 Organic Tropical Fruit Medley in 32-ounce bags, 10-ounce and 16-ounce bags of organic pineapple chunks, 32-ounce bags of whole strawberries, 32-ounce bags of organic strawberries and bananas, and 10-ounce bags of organic blackberries.
  • Trader Joe’s: “Best By” dates of late January and early February 2024 are printed on the 16-ounce bags of its organic tropical fruit blend.
  • Target: 12-ounce bags of Good & Gather Dark Sweet Whole Pitted Cherries, 48-ounce bags of Good & Gather Mango Strawberry Blend, 48-ounce bags of Good & Gather Mixed Fruit Blend, 12-ounce bags of Good & Gather Mango Chunks, 48-ounce bags of Good & Gather Blueberries, and 48-ounce bags of Good & Gather Triple Berry Blend.
  • Aldi: Season’s Choice Tropical Blend and Mixed Fruit 32-ounce bags from Aldi, with “Best by” dates ranging from October 2024 to February 2025.

The recall also includes Best Choice brand Pitted Red Tart Cherries delivered by Associated Wholesale Grocers stores and distribution sites in four states.
