Kroger climbs to No. 4 in Top 100 Retailers, surpassing The Home Depot. Grocery chains show mixed performance in the latest rankings.

The National Retail Federation has just published its list of the Top 100 Retailers for 2023. When compared to the previous year’s list, some grocery stores have made progress while others have fallen further behind.

Most notable? Kroger overtook The Home Depot to take the No. 4 rank this year, having previously held the No. 5 position in 2022.

According to the list, Kroger experienced a year-over-year rise of 7.5% in retail sales in the United States (2022 vs. 2021) despite a minor decline in the growth of their store count in the United States.

In this year’s rankings, Albertsons comes in at number 10, up from its previous position of fourteen in 2022. Despite a 4.3% year-over-year gain in store expansion, Aldi experienced the largest decline of any grocery store chain, slipping from sixth to fifteenth place. Walgreens Boots Alliance, Target, and CVS all remained in the top 10 while experiencing relatively minor shifts in their rankings. There was a shift in the rankings, as Target went from No. 8 to No. 6.

The most recent 52 or 53 weeks’ worth of annual retail sales are used to determine where each company falls on the list of the top 100 retailers. The figures for retail sales (which are solely tracked in the United States) are derived from several different estimating methods that are based on information that is publicly available. The numbers do not necessarily correspond to the official public filing data since the National Retail Federation uses a formula to calculate them.

Both the revenues of the company’s non-retail operating segments and its fuel sales are excluded unless otherwise specified. The methodology utilized by Kantar’s Retail IQ integrated research, which encompasses retail coverage, retailer coverage, and depth of coverage, has been utilized as the basis for the selection criteria for this list.
